    I have found the same on nj beaches,though it is rare here.I always thought it was a thick shell such as from an oyster that had been worn from tumbling in the sand.

    Hi folks,

    Here are some of the IDs I received from the people in the 1st post:

    pavona coral

    star coral

    siderastrea radius

    agaricia (possibly humilis? not sure)

    Julian was quite convinced it was agaricia. Gresham also gave this ID as well. Colin went with siderastrea radius.

    What do you think?

    I was going to guess Star Coral, but was leaving it up to the experts. They are common in Florida...
