When coral frags grow, do they need extra bare rock to spread out onto? For example, I got a bubble coral frag and placed it on the substrate of my tank. Should I surround it with more bare rock to allow for growth, or will it grow onto my aragonite directly? Same for my other corals (zoas, etc.) at the bottom of my tank.

it will just grow out from what it is now. the bubbles will expand 3 times their size for sure. leave it as it is , wont spread to other rocks

You can put other rocks around your zoa frag and it will spread onto them. When it has spread just cut the membrane that covers the rock and you will have separate rock frags.
