So, I picked up a new Koralia Nano (240GPH) yesterday and a new heater for my 10gal. I set everything up in the tank and everything seemed fine. All the coral looked happy with the new flow. This morning when I woke up all the coral except my 2 frogspawn and my kenya tree coral opened up nicely. The frogspawns and kenya only opened up about half way. Everything in my tank is exactly the same. I did a water change thinking one of my parameters or something was out of whack. I also added more Chaeto too. The temp only dropped 1 degree (from 80F to 79F). That wouldn't be enough of a different to cause my corals to be stressed. All my parameters are fine. the only thing I can think of is the flow from the new koralia is stressing the coral out, which i don't understand because all the coral are in great spots. The frogspawns are in low flow areas and the kenya is in a moderate flow area. Could it be the flow? Is it just something they need to get use to?

they could just be acclimating to the new flow. i would give them time. i'm not sure you can kill a Kenya tree. :)

I agree they need to adjust to the new flow.

i'm pretty sure I fixed the problem. I pointed the powerhead up and to the back wall of the tank which seemed to make the frogspawn perk up a little and I moved the kenya tree closer to the side that the powerhead is in but under it more where there is less flow. I guess I'll see how everything goes in the morning. :)

A lot of corals don't like constant direct flow. Sometimes "bouncing" the flow off the side of the aquarium glass will help "break it up". That said, any time you change flow patterns you can probably expect some of your corals to react to it until they get use to it.

I could be wrong but what about the residue associated with a new pump or powerhead? i.e. grease or lubricant?

Anything oil based should be very hydrophobic and not very soluble. It would most likely end up floating on the surface and should be removed efficiently by GAC if there is any in the water.

Changes in flow always tend to be problematic for corals with soft tissue. Direct flow is especially problematic and Many soft corals and some LPS corals tend not to like a lot of flow to begin with.
