Chucky yea... SG out there is a steady 1.023 and the water temp is about 74. That place is always allot cooler than the rest of the water around jamaica. It's because they have allot of fresh river water flowing into the area. The reefs out there are healther and more populated than other places. There is a little algae growth out there but it's not allot. I think that all tropics are suffering now. It's allot diffrent from when I was younger. I see allot of french angels, a few queen angels, tons of royal grammars, flame cardinals, Lettuice nudis.... I'll take calc and alk reading next time I go. I think that phos is about 0.5

;DKarma to ya TinFury, I read alot about what people keep there tanks at but not much on what readings in the ocean are.Ive been reading "THE REEF AQUARIUM Vol.1" (one of the best reef book i've read so far)and they get into all parameters but no real specifics to any region.

Chucky: I read alot. I read about species before I go look for them. Allot of the information in books don't seem to be right. Like they will say that Royal Grammars are a deep water fish but I've cought them in under 5ft of water. Zoanthids and Rics sometimes grow right out of the water as long as waves was over them. I have had butterflys from the wild that don't eat corals at all. And they take to flake food immediatly. I think that when you read a book on a species they are talking about a group of fish from a single location. Though the species might be similar you can never tell.

 

Hey Wunlym, I finally made it on this site! sorry I couldn't come by to see the other stuff you got. I see you told everyone about the diving trip. Port Antonio has one of the best reefs in Jamaica. I've never seen so many different color ric's in such large colonies before, it's a good thing you took pictures. We should go back at a later date and see if the colony got any larger.

 

I think the books may consider deep water as 5ft i guess.

Hmmm, that's quite true, most of the books do say that the royal gramma are deep water fish but if you didn't show me and i didn't see it with my own eyes, i'd never believe it. There were hundreds of them in water as shallow as 5ft to 15 ft max and they all seem to hover on the reef wall. It was a fantastic dive! Port Antonio (Blue Lagoon - Monkey Island)

 

I was thinking what would I need a fish tank for. I would dive in my giant fish tank everyday.

 

Hi Chucky - I Tested The Water Myself

Hi Chucky, Wunlym aka Timfury and I do diving together. We normally fill our water buckets to do water changes since we might as well do everything everytime we go diving. The Blue Lagoon area does have many rivers running into the lagoon area which is buffered by the outer coral reef. I have a few pictures on a different computer that would give you a better idea of how this actually looks, i'll post them later. The water temperature is between 78F to approximately 81F on hot days according to the temp gauge on my dive watch, it could also be a little bit cooler because of my body heat radiating onto the watch itself. Trust me, the water where this reef is thriving is a lot cooler than the other areas of Jamaica and the Florida keys. The strangest thing is that the salinity & SG is on the low side 1.020 to 1.021, where as the reading on the opposite side of the island where most of the reefs are dying are in the range of 1.023 to 1.024 i doubt the salinity was the contributing factor but mostly city run-offs from Kingston. I too have the Reef Aquarium Vol 1 & 2 and there really is not much specifics but I believe it was written this way as to being an introduction to the reef hobby. The volume 2 has a bit more specifics, you may want to pickup a copy yourself.

nice pics.I'm from the island of Trinidad and I can tell you one thing for sure, we don't have those kinds of corals down here. In Tobago maybe tho
