I have a recently setup tank (about 2 months) with some zoos and star polyps. im using Red sea CORAL PRO salt. will this add too many nutrients and cause cyano? I'm doing 15 percent water changes on a 5 gallon tank weekly. I'm starting to see clumps of cyano in high flow areas. Meanwhile green algae and diatoms are still there? Is the salt the cause?

If it the main source of your phosphates, then yes, but I doubt it.

Are you using RODI water? Your tank is new so I don't see the current outbreak a concern.

    Agreed.

If you're using tap water, you may be getting phosphates, regardless which salt mix you're using. FTR, people often confuse nutrients with elements. Reef-grade salts such as Coral Pro have elevated elements (cal, mag, alk), not nutrients (phosphates, nitrates, etc.).

New tanks go through a series of algae outbreaks until they mature. If you are using RO/DI water, not overstocked and not overfeeding, it usually dies off without any intervention. It may take a few months, though, to fully mature and completely clear up.

I've been using that salt for 2 years. On my 2nd or 3rd big bucket. Never had that problem. I would guess it is more a new tank cycle algae thing.
