So i seen another post about luck, i think ziggy maybe said that he lost all his sps, lps, corals one day because he had sps, lps, and leather corals in close proximity. this got me thinking i may be rollin the dice as well. I need some help. i ve looked at all the listed behavior of my corals, but want to see what you all think. you can look at my pics to see were stuff is placed. do you see any problems with a mixture like this. i have 3 leathers( elec. green toadstool, green finger leather, and what i belive is a colt), i have 3 lps a (frogspawn, torch, and candy corals), i also have 2 lil mushrooms, and some zoa's. obviously the lps corals have some distance between them and the other corals.

1st?- do you see upcoming problems with this mix?

2nd?- can any of these corals be placed near each other, (can leathers touch other leathers?, can lps touch other lps?

3rd?-would you remove any of these?

4th?- would adding sps be like putting fuel to a fire? what would i have to remove to keep sps?

i did do research, but with all the diff variations in corals, and diff data on them, its kinda hard to tell what going to cause a problem or not. none of the corals are touching now, they all have a good amount of space to grow,( esp. the torch).
please input some advice, so i can avoid a possible disaster.
    thank you!!

    1. I don't see any problems with the mix so long as you provide enough space between the different species.

    2. Leathers can be close to each other but I wouldn't put the leathers too close to any other corals. LPS corals should not be placed close enough to each other where they can touch. You can put frogspawn and hammers next to each other but that's about it as far as I know. Leave room between lps corals so that sweeper tentacles do not reach other corals.

    3. No.

    4. No. As long as you place the the SPS far enough away from other corals that may sting them or affect them using chemical warfare as so long as you run carbon 24/7, you should not have any problems.

I can tell you that our flower pot (goniopora) stung one of the trumpet corals. I had the trumpet too close to the flower pot. When the flower pot fully opened after a few days, it was close enough to come in contact with the trumpet. Visibly, the trumpet shrunk down and turned from pink to brown in that little contact area. It only affected a small part of one of the heads before I moved it again.

i had 6 types of sps,a dozen lps,and hundreds of soft corals all in a 55 gallon tank.right now i could take out 1oo xenia,100 zoas, and 50 mushrooms before i noticed anything missing.i think i had way to much of too many different kinds all close, not touching but close.i would'nt worry about yours for now.i'll post a photo when i get a chance to show you what i mean.its fully stocked.my greenstarpolyps get killed 0ff by mushrooms and kenya and their both softies i let it happen though. watch all corals

    thanks guys.
ok good. so im still in good shape, yeah i make sure to leave plenty of room between each coral, and i already run carbon 24 7. the torch got at least 6in all directions. its got a sweeper that comes out every now and again that is mad long, it got me one night cleaning the tank lol ended up with water all over the place, when i jerked my hand out of the water. frogspawn never had any sweepers. ok i feel better, you got me scared for a min ziggy. had to make sure i was still on the right track.
could you recommend a sps that is least likely to be aggressive, or be attacked using chemi?(or are the all pretty similar )
the sweepers on lps are fine to deal with, but the realease of chemicals is kinda scarey.
im stocking my tank with the few corals that i really want to have and leaveing them room to grow in to the space around them, rather than filling space with various corals.( well thats what im tryin to do, sometimes its hard to resist that urge.)

I started running carbon again...I have two Toadstool Corals, one a long tentacle...They have grown about 5X in the past 9 months are nearly 10" across. I have lost two plates and a brain as they were fairly close to each other, and they all moved closer to the toadstools....

Run carbon and do regular water changes and you will not have any problems.

My tank is chalk-a-block full of different softies, plus a good amount of frogspawn.

Nature will take care of space needs for whichever kind is most dominent over time.

I do think there is some serious chemical warfare occuring, so another reason I do regular water changes.

Sign of is some of the finger leathers and kenya trees start looking "wilty" over time between WC's ... they perk right up after doing. - definitly some kind of toxin build up in water. :-/

heres the example i promised.i was just doing a 7 gallon water change a month and all my tests showed the water was good.theres no test for chemical warfare in the tank.
