I was given 2 corals by a friend and one had a small spot when i got it where it looked like it had deteriorated. I don't know what kind of coral it is and it seems to be getting worse in my tank. Can anyone I.D these two for me and possibly give a cause for the decline in coral health. i circled the two in question but its hard to see.

Dead center is a pagoda cup.

Further back... maybe a favia? It looks pretty unhappy as well, so it's kinda hard to tell...

The pagoda is bleached; looks like too much light.

It's also unhappy; what are your tank parameters? Do you have other stony corals? All I see are softies elsewhere in the photo, and stonies require better conditions than softies.

any ideas why its wasting away? I had it under quad t5's but my fixture almost lit my house on fire so i just got 2 new 60w LED light fixtures. I want to get it back to how it looked when i got it. the polyps hardly come out now. I was also curious will hermits feed on it? more specifically scarlet hermits as i notice they are usually on or around the cup.

See above, you may have missed my edit.

You're burning it up, get it some shade and acclimate to the light.

Hermits won't eat it, but they will eat the dead/decaying tissue.

    Back to the parameter question...

It is a dry heat, yeah right !

As usual I have to agree with evolved.

It may also be growing some algae on the exposed skeleton, which the hermits are munching on as well.

Dont think its getting too much. I have pagodas under 6 54w T5HO fixtures. If it bleaching, dont think its getting too much light being under 120w worth of led's.

post your parameters as well as the type of filtration equipment and media your running.

It's all a matter of what it's acclimated to, however. And LEDs could surprise you on what they can/might bleach.

The led lights have only been inplace for 2 days and this has been occuring over the last 2 -3 weeks. i had an outbreak of cyano and i dusted off the cup coral as it was covered with as ultra soft paint brush. this is when its decay seems to have kicked off. I had moved it to a shaded area but had little effect. the polyps seemed to stay burried in the skeleton. I am running a reef octopus vortec 300 skimmer, i have a 20G fuge with cheto and caulpra. i use a aquaclear 70 for mechanical filtration with carbon and biomax. i am on my way into work an will post my water parameters later this evening. I only have started keeping stony corals all others are softies..

    Please check:
    Salinity
    Temp
    pH
    Magnesium
    Calcium
    Alkalinity
    Phosphates
    Nitrates

The answer lies in there somewhere.
