I woke up this morning to find that a digital thermometer had fallen into the sump. More then likely it was in there since late last night as I checked the tank before I went to bed. Do you think there is any need for concern? I immediately did a 20% water change. I plan on doing another change early this afternoon when i can break away for lunch...

I recently had the opportunity to open one of those up, I was trying to see if there was any way to calibrate it.

Except for the battery a couple of really small copper contacts on the PC board inside which are pretty much covered with soldier the rest was all plastic.

So I really don't think you will have anything to worry about.

Hey! Don't worry Baxter! A typical electronic components don't react (corrode) in highly mineralized water so easily! Moreover, marine water is very rich in Cl- and SO42- that easily react with heavy metals (that are very often in electronic parts) and form insoluble (therefore biologically inactive) salts, that simply sediment on your substrate!

Hey Camilsky, That is a big relief...My protein skimmer was going nuts this morning so I thought it was caused by the thermometer....Karma man8)

Long term submersion of batteries would be my only concern.

Once lost a large FW fish population after pager went missing for couple of months.

Found pager when cleaning out tank. Batteries really corroded bad.

Kid (~4 years old at time) must have thought fish needed to hear it beep:confused:

I am really sorry and I know the loss of any fish is not funny but this part just kills me! ;D;D

My grandson dropped a pair of headphones connected to a walkman in my wifes freshwater tank years ago, so "the fish could listen too"....

Kid's gotta love em' cause you go to jail if you kill them!

That was my concern as well, Omard....Good thing it was only overnight, probably 6 or 7 hours...The thermometer works perfectly fine...I still did a major water change to be on the safe side....8)
