In a classic bit of newb-ness, I started with a SeaClone 100 on my 55-gal tank. While it does produce some dark nasty stuff, I'd like to upgrade a bit better of a unit, esp since I'm now in the process of converting to reef.

It'd need to be a HOB model, but that's about the only restriction. I've heard some good things about the Coralife skimmers...anyone have input on them (or recommendations for other skimmers?)

    TIA!

i have the 220 version and it works great. Only thing i don't like about it is the dial to adjust the flow, its really not precise. What i did to remedy this was take a 6" piece of scrap wood and cut a lil notch in it that would fit over the dial.

I would recommend this as a good skimmer for anyone

I would go with an Aqua C Remora skimmer. They do the best IMO!

Go with an AquaC Remora or Remora pro if you plan on upgrading in the future. There is no fiddling with adjustments and they cannot overflow and cause any flooding. You just have to keep them clean. I run a Remora on my 75g reef with an upgraded pump and a modified Remora Pro with an upgraded pump in my sump for my 120g FOWLR tank. The customer service with AquaC is second to none. They have sent me free replacement parts on a couple of occasions and are always easy to reach by phone and email.

I just recv'd my AquaC Urchin pro. I washed it out
with white vinegar, set it in the sump, turned it on...
within 30 seconds (No Joke!) it was producing dark
brown skim...Nasty, smelly, And did not taste very
good either...(joke, I'm not going to try it, you try it)
Best investment I have ever made. Mine came with
a chip out of the collection cup. I called and they
are sending me a new cup...FREE! No questions.
I didn't even buy it from them...I will never buy
    anything else.!!:sweethear

I wouldn't buy any other kind of skimmer. Can't wait to get my EV180 for my 125 gallon tank!

You just have to clean the Aqua C skimmers every 3 months or so to keep them skimming efficiently at least in my experience with the Remora's. If I notice a drop off in skimming I take the whole unit out and clean it with vinegar and water and then hose it out or clean it out with the sprayer in the kitchen sink and it works like a charm again.

    Interesting discussions.

Given that I know how (not) well my SeaClone performs, I wonder if it would be worth getting one of each and comparing after a week of use...
