I've taken the box off. Youll get alot of microbubbles though.

I do not use the bubble diffuser. I had a lot of problems with bubbles backing out into the sump. I am using a micro bag which I picked up at the LFS. It works perfectly.

Mine is now housed in the sump in its own chamber so the microbubbles are not a problem. It did take me a while on my old tank to get it setup correctly as it hung on the back of the tank. I agree with baxter, get a micro bag, a lot less hassle and works great.

umm can u elaborate a little on this mesh bag? i was told to use prefilters or anything that would fit on the end of that tube to take the place of the filter box..dont know the size or what to get.

I finally found a solution which gives me zero bubbles. The sponge that came with the skimmer was allowing the bubbles to back out of the diffuser. I replaced it with a more porous sponge, one from aqua clear. i cut the hole to size, the hole in the sponge that came with the diffuser was too big. i also replaced the white padding in the bottom of the diffuser with a filter bag that comes with any whisper filter. It is working great, thus far

I'm currently tossing around the idea of removing the bubble diffuser from my Coralife 125. We recently set up a smaller (29 g) tank and I purchased a used Coralife 65. I've read a good number of reviews that say the 65 skimmers aren't worth squat, but the 65, without the diffuser, has produced a far thicker, drier foam, with a nice dark skimmate. I have to say, I honestly believe the 65 without the diffuser on it, to be out-performing the 125 with one......

The down side to the absense of the diffuser is the increase of bubbles, with which comes an increase in salt creep. Since I have the skimmer mounted as "hang on sump", I was able to measure out and drill an acrylic cover for the skimmer section of the sump. This has all but eliminated the salt creep from the entire filtration system.

I'm looking at buying a coralife super skimmer 65 for my 46gal bowfront. Do you like the one that you have? I had a guy at a store tell me the other day that it is also good if you use a skimmer that is rated for double the capacity of your tank which would make me have a 100gal skimmer. Have you ever heard of this and could there be any truth to what this guy is saying? Let me know when you get a chance.

    Thank you, Brandon

If you want to remove the box just get a piece of 3/4" pvc and cut alternating slits down the sides of it and it will work so much better than the foam box thing not that many micro bubles either.

excuse the crappy drawing it was just a quick one.

Sorry, I realize this thread is old. I just recently bought a used Coralife 220 skimmer and it didn't have the bubble diffuser. From what you guys have posted it seems that I don't actually need one, would you agree? My tank is 53gallons and the sump is something like 36gallons. I plan on putting the skimmer directly in the sump. Should I try to order a new bubble diffuser or would sponges or pvc pipe work better?

    Thanks
    Sheila
