Has anyone ever used Purple Up or Kent Marine Purple Tech? One of my rocks has a lot of coraline algae on it already so does that mean it will spread pretty fast with this chemical? Also should I stop dosing magnesium and iodine? I know i'll have to test calcium. Thanks for the help!

as long as you keep your calcium up your coraline will spread. ive used purple up but honestly its not necessary.

you should only dose things you are specifically testing for. If you're not running Iodine tests, stop dosing it immediately.

Mg is one of the most important elements to keep stable. you want to be testing your levels and dose accordingly. (1400ish is a good level).

I think purple up is a marketing ploy. keep your Mg and Ca stable and the coralline will spread just fine.

I wouldn't waste your money on it. Look up info on a kalk drip or add it to your ATO reservoir and watch the coraline explode.

i agree with grounded. no need for the purple up. especially since one of your rocks is already seeded. dont be in a rush for the spreqad of it, because eventually you will be curwsing it. lol. it wil lbe everywhere. just be patient and you will be rewarded.

used Purple up - regretted it when my acrylic tank lasted 18 months before I replaced it due to all the scratches I got from trying to remove coralline from the front

tests 1st - additives 2nd , thats the best order to do things in

in a tank with lots of softies etc - adding calcium and magnesium may be a waste of money, you might find with weekly or fortnightly water changes your levels always stay within acceptable parameters

so knowing the parameter tolerances, testing to find where your tank is at and then adding things to correct anything thats not within tolerance is
the best way to go about things

I use to use purple up and hated it. Most of the Ca would precipitate anyway because mag and i think strontium were not in the correct ratio to make the Ca available. I now use Seachem reef complete and the coralline growth is outstanding. Already has the mag and stront in the proper ratio in the bottle.

I don't think anyone is saying Purple Up doesn't work. It is just a VERY expensive way to dose. You can get a gallon of each (Cal, Alk, and Mag), for about 20$. How much are you paying for 8oz of Purple Up? Which is the same thing.

I've used purple up and it works, it also threw my parameters out of check. But it does encourage purple coraline growth, I can vouch for that much.
