My tanks been up and running since April or so and I have Coraline all over the Glass and Rocks. Recently I have noticed on the right side of the tank about half way down the Coraline is starting to turn white. I have seen this happen to filter hoses when I have taken them out of the water for a while and exposed them to air, but this spot is well below the water change line so it never gets exposed.

What could be the cause? It is on a circle about 8 inches in diameter.

Does Coraline have a life cycle?

    Any Ideas

The rest of the tank seems to be doing fine, I even have tons of Coraline in my fuge now and have to scrape it off of the front glass every week or so in the main tank.

What are your parameters? Ca, Mg, pH, dKH?

Certain types do have parameters that they thrive in, usually one will die off and be replaced by another. This may be happening.

I've had this happen for two reasons I believe that some of it turned white/gray and died because my dkh dropped down to about 7 for a while. It also died right around my heater, it must be the temperature.

low dkh definitely could be the cause, also the lack of iodine causes this as well. I have had this happen several times, when I bring the iodine level up it always grows back with a vengance...Be careful with the dosing of iodine, be sure you are testing it if youdecide to dose it.

yup i experienced the same thing recently. i started keeping my parims at higher levels, and my coraline bleached flaked off and was replaced by a thicker darker coraline that grows twice as fast,(i bet you the bleaching will continue to spread from that point out)

i thought something was wrong until it started coming back even faster, now its like a thick pink plating type, befor it was a thin purple spots

Thanks everyone, the coraline is allready growing back where it had turned white. Maybe it was just a natural cycle, it does seem to be a pinker color though.

Just to add, upgrading a light fixture can also kill off some coralline. A buddy of mine upgraded from a 4 bulb T5 HO fixture to a 6, and didn't really "acclimate" the coralline to the amped up wattage. About half of it on the upper half of his rock died off leaving just bare rock. Most has grown back now, but that's just a heads up to no one in particular.
