So the main reason I created a thread about getting rid of cyano is because i want coralline to grow successfully in my tank. One of my rocks has lots of cyano and green algae on it; I got it this way from the LFS. I didn't really worry about it for a while, but now I'm thinking that coralline won't be able to grow on that rock because regular algae and cyano are on it, therefore not giving coralline a good surface to grow on. Is this true? Also, is there really any definite way of getting rid of algae and cyano? I do use ro/di water. TIA

My tank is relatively new. I dont have a lot of coralline growing in it but I have some. I have found that it grows best in the slightly shaded areas of the tank. I think its just a patience issue. Maybe somebody else can clarify some more.

It's a mature tank kinda of thing. Ryland hit it right on the head, it's a patience thing. Once your levels are stable you'll see it start to take off, but believe me once you have it growing everywhere I mean EVERYWHERE you'll wish it's gone. Any experts if I am wrong please correct me.

My tank is fairly young but my coralline growth has begun. It's spreading everywhere including shells I placed in for my hermits. Mine is in low light, high light, rock, sand, shells, etc.

+1 to this mine even grows on my CUC. I predominately have green coralline on the back walls and pink/purple on my live rocks though its kinda neat looking. As far as cyano its not algae so it looks like its attached (encrusted) but its not, so you should be able to pick and scrub it of with. I wish a toothbrush when its cleaning day.

That was the point I tried to make in the other thread... if you can't get it off easily, it isn't cyano. That wasn't a joke jumper. Red coralline can be the the same dark maroon red color of cyano. The differences are coralline dosn't come off easily, it dosn't produce little air bubbles and if you have enough to scape off, you can drop some in some vinegar and it should fizzle. Regardless, once your tank matures, some color coraline algae will take over. It dosn't matter what is there now, the color that takes over will be the one that likes your tanks environment the best.

IME coralline with the right parameters is unstoppable. It grows under, around and over everything, including algae. The algae will most likely die off, but the coralline will remain.

+1! My CUC attacks my red kind and it grows back with a vengeance LOL
