Brown would most likely be algae or diatoms. It can grow over coralline IME. Purple is good. It can take a few months to get going. Low phosphates are good for growing coralline.

Took my tank several months. Keeping you calc, mag, and alk up will speed up the process... can you post a pic of what you are scraping?

Corailline does come in many colors, light pink, dark pink, beige, dark red, blue, neon red, purple, dark purple, green, white - you name it.

my tank is on mont 5 and the brown doesnt look like diamtom. Its actually hard and encrusted on the glass like coralline. I scrape it off and today i saw it grew back this time with purple spots not just brown.

those look almost green to me but that is how my coralline started on my other tank first green coralline and then tons of purple but it did take stable params of calc and alk for it to really take off. Once it does it will be everywhere including the front and side glass.

Its Coraline. Just give it a little time. It took me nearly six months to get it going in my DT. Then one day...a spot here...a spot there....and BOOM tank is being over run! I love it though. I have several shades of purple, pink, and what appears to be a velvet color of Coraline.
