Are calcium reactors always necessary in SPS or LPS tanks? I'm guessing that is the only way to get calcium back into the water for the corals to build their skeletons.

Short answer, no. Most can get all the elements back into the aquarium via water changes. Those with a heavy load of coral can dose cal, alk, mag via a doing pump(s). Calcium reactors are great, but should only be used by advanced aquarists IMO.

Whewwww. Thank's for that advice. I'm just beginning to understand the basics, and then reactors popped onto my radar. Glad I won't need one right off.
