My first guess is that she was leaving rats unattended with the snake when it was refusing food. Something certainly wasn't right. Snakes are very quick at catching, immobilizing, and killing their prey.

I've been keeping snakes for over 30 years. I've always fed live and have never had any issues. My very first wouldn't touch her food if it wasn't alive and moving. My current Columbian Red-Tail was a rescue about 4 years ago- a neighbor had him and was feeding him reheated frozen rats. He had stopped eating and became lethargic. Once I acquired him and saw his condition, I gave him a live gerbil; he immediately grabbed it, and has been fine ever since.

I had a corn snake for quite a while, until he pulled a Houdini one day and we could never find him, even with a top on. We never figured out how he got out. Make sure you always have a sealed lid.

Yeah something doesn't sound right. I'm curious what size tanks did you keep your corn snakes in?

    Dude, royal/ball python.

Looks like a real snake and keeps its length under 6 feet usually.
Can be a pain to feed sometimes, brown bagging the prey always worked for me though.

Brown paper bag contains the prey (dead) leave the bag and prey on top of the vivarium, when the snake starts to climb the tank and can smell the food, place the bag and food into the vivarium with the top open, the snake will enter the bag, eat and then leave.

This works great for a snake that is a little "food shy"
