Found some great deals on pre-drilled tanks at my LFS. So I'm thinking of putting my recently purchased 92 gal BF Rect. back on Craigslist and buying a 150 or 180 gal. instead.

Is there a performance difference, noise difference or unobvious aesthetic consideration between the 2? Based solely on looks I'm leaning towards the centrally located ones.

    Thanks

Nope, no performance difference if the design is the same.

If you can get a centrally mounted on, I would.

Thanks horkn. I do like the looks of the center mounted ones better.

I agree horkn, if you can get a center mount, go for it. It provides greater viewing angle. The only caveat is if you are planning to "build in" your tank so that it's only visible from the front. If that's the case, I'd go with a corner(s) overflow to free up space in the middle.

I had mine built with a custom offset center overflow just to be a little different. I prefer center to corners too.

I don't know if you're referring AGA or Perfecto but in that realm of plastic pre-installed overflows here is what I've learned in my research of a 72" 125 or 150.

If you use both bulkheads as drains rather than drain and return then the AGA Megaflow overflow will flow quite a bit more. The stock AGA sized bulkheads are rated at 600 gph. So theoretically you could flow 1200 with two standpipes.

Broaner, a 1" PVC bulkhead is rated at just under 1000 gph. (980 IIRC). Why AGA Aqueon rates their megaflow at 600gph is not really accurate, unless the piping (durso) is the restriction. The bulkhead will flow just under 1000gph, so either that is legalese speaking for the 600 rating, or the standpipe is the restriction.

    AGA.

Does any one make a more attractive built in overflow? I really hate those black plastic ones but my LFS fishmonger made some pretty strong arguments against using a HOB overflow. I've also read more on here against the hanging overflows than for them. Any thoughts?

glasscages.com sells intenal overflows and I believe there are others too. I had my tank built by LeeMar in the San Diego area and I really like the shape of their overflow. Its made out of like 3/8" black acrylic and very beefy compared to the plastic megaflows.

one more note, if you have a choice get the 180 instead of the 150. the wider depth will make aquascaping much easier and the extra capacity is always a plus :)
