A UV isn't really going to help you with algae issues.

A UV kills things that go through it. Algae is going to end up sitting in one spot and grow from there, so the vast majority of algae won't pass through the UV at all.

You need to remove nutrients, which are what the algae needs to grow. Cut down on feedings, and add a skimmer. How much do you feed your fish, and how often? What kind of fish do you have?

so you think i should get a protein skimmer instead of the uv??? i have a porcupine puffer, and a flame angel in a 38gal. I feed rosie (porc puff) 2 pieces of frozen shrimp every other day, and i feed the flame angel formula 2

I would cut down to one piece of shrimp, and change from formula 2 to another algae food. The pellets give me bad algae issues, as I think they have quite a bit in terms of extra nutrients that will let algae grow.

Get the skimmer too. It's a much better investment to kill off algae than the UV sterilizer.
