It's a special PVC fitting that allows you to extend its length. Lowes and Home Depot both carry them in the same spot as their other PVC fittings. A lot of folks use these when they have to repair breaks in irrigation lines. Instead of having to dig up enough pipe to be able to bend enough to get your new fittings in, you just expose a 6-8" section, cut out the 6 inches of bad pipe, slip this into the gap and then extend it out so that you can cement the couplings on each end.

+K to Otty for the great suggestion of using these on a standpipe.

Sounds like you got it all worked out... but FWIW, the very top of my Durso (the cap w/ vent hole) is about level with the top of my over flow box. I have about 1-1/2 or 2" of falling water. You can hear it, but it's not a bad sound. Falling water creates negative ions and is considered by many to be a very soothing white-noise sound.

Ok, this is awesome. I cut a little more off, and now the top of the pipe is about dead even with the top of the overflow. The net result? I have a mag 12 for my return, until now I've had it dialed down and have only been able to use about 1/3 of it's capacity. With this little adjustment I have more flow from the tank through the overflow, down the drain and have been able to turn the return up to full capacity. A massive 1200 gph (minus head loss, of course). Right on!

I tend to go for overkill on just about every project I work on. ;D
