Can anybody tell me the exact amount of salt to use per gallon of water?I use reef cystals, and going by the directions,i always have to add more salt, then it turns into a long process of tweeking it,or i overkill, then have to add more water or end up wasting some good saltwater.I shoot for 1.024 sg

Every batch of salt is mixed differently. However, once you get your tank salinity establish, mixing the NSW will not effect it very much if you're doing small water changes. General measurement is 1/2 cup of salt per gallon, 2 & 1/2 per 5g bucket. I always shoot for 1.022-1.023....

Usually, people shoot for 1.024-1.025, since that gives them a bit of room to fluctuate.

No,i think your reading it wrong,I know i want my salinity at 1.024,what i'm tring to figure out is how much salt mix per gallon of water,so i can pretty much nail it on the head the first time, and yes the directions call for 1/2 cup per gallon, but thats too low and i always have to add more.So what i'm asking is-is it like 3/4cup or ?

Good luck, I been doing this for 20 some years, fish only at first and reef for the last 3 and have never found that magic number! Mostly becasue as someone else said each batch of salt is different.

What I do is fill my bucket almost all the way but I leave room in case I have to add some water. Then I add the salt, over the years I can get close. After letting it mix a little while I check it, and add salt or water which ever it needs in small amounts till I get it right on the mark. Which ever I add water or salt I do it in small amounts till its right.

If you keep track of how many cups of salt you put in the next time you do it you can get it pretty close the first time but you will always have to adjust it till get it right on the mark.

That's about the same way i mix it,but in filling my tank for the first time yesterday,i overshot it and ended up wasting about about 5 gallons of good water(i know thats a minor amount, but i buy my water by the jug)and was just wondering if there was a better way.But now the tank is filled and set,so it'll be easier now making smaller batches for water changes. Thanks everyone.

Cool, thats the kind of answer i was looking for, that'll give me a starting point to work with,i'll start with 14 and experiment while keeping track of exactly how much i use,and i can also cut that down(as it's only a 28 gallon)so most of my changes will only be about 3 gallon or so.Thanks Guy.

for 3 gals, i would think the around 8 oz should get you close to .024.

by the way, how you feeling?
