COTM - October 2010 - Montipora Digitata

Scientific Name: Montipora digitata
Origin: Pacific ocean
Lighting: moderate to high - see personal observation below
Flow: moderate to high - prefers less flow IME than Acro species, Milli etc
Growth: - under well maintained parameters -grows reasonably quickly
Water Params: - requires calcium, magnesium and alkalinity within normal reef tolerances
Personal Observations: these 2 pieces faired very well in lower 3rd of tank lit by 6 x 80 watt T5 lamps - in fact any attempts to place them higher resulted in polyp retraction , which in one case (green one) stayed like that until it was moved back down to lower 3rd
other observation, whilst getting used to maintaining a regular supplementing regime, I noticed the tips on the blue one becoming very white and having a slight dusty appearance, research indicated this was Alk burn, probably from it being in the flow path of where my Alk additions where being made - once my procedure was corrected to erradicate this, within 2 weeks the white areas disappeared and the polyps returned to opening in those areas

Nice write up Steve - interesting observation on 'alk burn' - I've seen this on my digi and I thought it might be from the tops being exposed during water changes. I'll have to think about that now a bit.

probably one of my favorite sps... for multiple reasons

looks cool
inexpensive
grows quick
comes in a nice variety of colors

 

Definitely a cool SPS.

Mine has been growing very quickly, probably the fastest branching SPS I own. It also has a pretty unique growth pattern.

Very, very nice crank. Mine 'oozes' like that too. However mine are tan colored, not neon like yours. I'll trade you.
