I have two different ammonia test kits, a Seachem and a Nutrifin (Hagen).
The Nutrafin shows 0 after two seperate tests. The Seachem shows 0 and .3 for two seperate tests. The Seachem also showed .3 for distilled water. Would distilled water have ammonia? The Seachem has a reference solution that does show zero, but it seems that each disc is reacting differently.

Distilled water should have no ammonia, nitrites or nitrates. In fact, it should have nearly zero disolved solids of any kind. Contamination of your sample, perhaps from the pipette or the test tube?

Since it is distilled and stripped of everything it should not contain ammonia. Is it possible that your test results might have been contaminated from rinsing test tube in tap water maybe or covering tube with finger? Just curious.

I rinsed the pipette with distilled for each test. I previously had my water tested at the LFS and it showed 0 for ammonia then, which probably has no bearing because it wasn't today.

I suspect that it may be a problem with those little yellow discs in the Seachem test. At any rate I'll get it tested tomorrow at the LSF to be sure....

I've been rinsing with RO water and today with distilled, I am careful as possible not to contaminate but can't be absolutely sure.

I would agree there is something causing the results aside from the water, possibly the discs as you stated.

One time I asked my LFS to test some water for me, they suggested I be very careful about what I brought my water samples to them in (as far as a container) stating that it must be known clean glass with no contaminants and that a classic LFS trick is to get you to bring your water in so they test it and it shows "stuff" so they can try to get you to buy things. Not saying your lfs is doing that (especially since they're showing 0ppm), just something to keep in mind.

Yeah I believe that! Last time I was in one of the LSF's shop and looking at a tank of live rock I coyly asked isn't that "antipasto" (aiptasia)? He said yes, you just need to buy some Joe's Juice to get rid of that, I looked at him and said "So why don't you use it on your tanks instead of sending the stuff home with me?" I got this sort of pissed off look and he said, "TIME, I just don't have time!!!"

I have seen faulty test chemicals do that before. I would test with another kit to make sure.
