Saw two of these at the lfs today, and they were insainly cool watching the electricity in them. Anyone have them in their reef?

I don't think they have a very good survival record in aquariums.

yea i just did a quick read up on them, and saying that they need a mature reef and 0 nitrates, so looks like its a no for me. But they were just sooooo cool!

Mature reef and 0 nitrates have nothing to do with them. Actually, they would prefer more nitrates. They need a TON of food (more than just about ANY home aquarium could supply). They also do better in cooler temperatures than a typical reef tank.
I have seen some success with them in super large systems, and some that even set up a phyto drip system specifically at them. I tried one once, but it kept moving to areas where I couldn't feed it (they need to be fed at least 3 times a day typically), so I took it back. 99% of them die in 6 months due to starvation. I would say its a creature better left in the ocean.

sounds to difficult and not worth the trouble, glad i didn't impulse buy on them. They were just so amazingly cool, almost like alienish looking, but very cool creatures.

We bought one at a very good price about a week ago and it literally lasted 12 hours. Our tank parameters are perfect and the tank itself has been established for 15 years. Looked great in the store, looked great at home, when we woke up in the morning it was dead. Pretty strange considering it was doing great before we went to sleep. Apparently they dont have a good track record and are pretty close to impossible to keep alive. It was beautiful which is why we bought it, probably wont get another one though.

sounds like the scallop is like a mandarin. lol my mom saw a mandarin today at the lfs and wanted me to get one, they had a lot of skinny ones but a few nice looking fat ones, but i had to tell her no that i could not get one because they are for the most part to hard to keep alive and my tank is nooooo where near ready for one.

still can't believe the scallop couldn't last in a 15yr old tank, it would probably last 5 minutes*if that* in mine if it only lasted 12hrs in yours

Yea we were shocked to wake up and find it dead. They must be hit or miss, we have heard so many horror stories about them. However our fish store has had one in their display tank forever and its doing just fine.
