    Hello all,
I need to store my newly acauired 180 all glass tank on it's end for up to a few months, while I build the stand, fashion the overflow (it's drilled), etc.
My outslde storage shed has ample safe room, IF I stand it on end.

Interestingly, I mentioned that to the guy I bought it from. He said that's how it was stored- on end, when he bought it.
I would be putting it on a 3/4 incrase firm foam pad also.

I think the answer is yes, but if you KNOW that this is NOT a good idea- please post it. Affirming that you've seen or know it's OK, I'd like to hear that too.

As of right now, it's still in the back of my truck since yesterday until I can assemble the team of 3-4 adults to move it safely.

    TIA

    Todd

    good question!

I know it's braced but I personally, wouldn't do it for a few months.
    Why? Just a gut feeling.

If I ever go with a tank that big, I'd have to go new.
I'd already be too wary about a leak \ break causing home damages...

I did it for a couple months with my 180. No problems. Make sure to keep it flat and place it on a piece of carpet or hard foam for protection. Covering it with a blanket might not be a bad idea either.

The 4 viewing panes of glass all sit on the bottom pane correct?
    That's my thought anyway.

Standing it on edge for an extended period of time goes against the design it was built for, strength.
There would be no stress on the "side" pane now facing the ceiling.
Again, this is just my non-teachnical reasons of my gut feeling.
    I gotta good sized gut!

The two long panels butt into the short 2x2 panel, between that and the bracing I felt relatively secure leaving it standing up. There may be some validity to the design factor, but I would think the weight of the water long term would be more burdensome for the tank.

When I bought the tank there were several stored on their sides.

Let's say a 180 weighs about 200 pounds and you stood it up on it's side. A 2' x 2' panel with 200 pounds of pressure is 2.88 pounds per square inch.

I believe your math in incorrect.
    2' x 2' = 576 sq in / 200 = the 2.88 you arrived at.
so if put that info into how much per sq in when sitting normally...
    6' x 2' = 1728 sq in / 200 = 8.64. it got heavier!

we need to divide the weight into the sq in
ALSO it does not weigh 200 #, it weighs 338

    So,
    6' x 2' = 1728 sq in. 338 / 1728 = .195 lbs sq in normal position
    2' x 2' = 576 sq in 338 / 576 = .586 lbs sq in on side

That's what I plan to do. My planned storage spot would be the safest, and least burdensome for my house, garage, etc.

Thanks also FB, but I think it will handle it as they often do it that way at the wherehouses, etc.

I'll try and move it out of the back of my truck this afternoon, if not, it won't get moved until tomorrow afternoon.

    Anyone else?

It IS like new, and only saw water less than a year I think. It's clean,
already drilled with bulkheads, etc. Sometimes it's worth it to by it 'pre owned' ;-)

    Well, a mute point ATM.
My neighbor and his HS daughter moved it into the shed, we put it flat/bottom down for now.
I didn't feel comfortable lifting it enough to have it rest on it's end without applying pressure to one of the seams- so we didn't attempt it.

All is good, still has room, etc.

Thanks for the input though anyways, I still may get a more massive team and put it on it's end
