Silly question. I would hate to "humanely dispose of him" and haven't been able to locate a LFS that would take him off my hands...would it be okay to release him of the coast of South Florida. I researched and they are native to the waters, not sure about this particular variety, but Xanthid crabs in general. I would need to go through the acclimation procedures right? If it is even possible. What are your thoughts?

If you really concerned... Throw him in the freezer where he will PAINLESSLY stop living. To me it's not worth worrying about. Kinda like a cockroach. But that would be the best way or find something that would use him as a food source. There's enough of those crabs in the wild, one more down the drain will not hurt anything.

Those IME are harmless, except for, they can topple your largest of rocks and do eat things on occasion :p

If you look at the tips for his claw it is flat and cup shaped. This is an algae eater and will not likely go for any fish. I have seen them eat Acros but never anything like a fish. I would keep an eye on it but with your tank set up he should be fine in there for now.

IME i had an emerald crab chew on a ocellaris, ate most of its dorsal fin. And an emerald crab is suposed to be an "vegetarian" with his flat and cup shaped claws. So i dont trust the little buggers.

Jason, You and Gresham would know better than I would, But I am with Marc. I don't trust them either and I would take it out if it were in my tank. JMHO John
