I woke up to find my son's tank losing water from a crack which started from underneath and spread to the right side. I was able to get the fish into a quarantine tank before they ran out of water. The good new was I had just purchased him a new 40 gal acrylic tank with a nice oak stand two days prior. I am aquascaping it now and then going to cycle it. It is freshwater so the cycle should go quick. I am sure the threat of losing water during the crack stressed the fish and moving rapidly into the quarantine tank stressed them. How long should I wait to move the fish into the new tank. I was hoping to move them with in 7 days if possible.

If it's fresh water, it shouldn't be too bad. As long as the water settles out and the temp and pH are within range. What kind of freshwater fish are they? I know some of my Oscars could have survived anything moving related (as long as they were fed) - it really depends on the kind of fish you have an how sensitive they are. Are they eating in the new quarantine tank?

I'm sorry about your crack! I have to admit, when I first read the name of the post, I said, who put crack in their tank?...then I read the whole post. Ditto on what Bogie said, if the parameters/temp are good and you dechlorinated you should be able to drop those puppies on in.

Thanks for the replies I have been busy helping my boy with his new tank so I could not get on the computer. All the water chem's in the new tank were great an I let my 4 year old drop his fish buddies into his new tank on Sunday. To answer the question of what type of fish he has 5 tetras, 2 tiger barbs, 1 betta, 1 albino catfish, 1 apple snail.

They should all be fine. They're all pretty resilient fish. Good to hear that everything's working out.
And remember kids, and Linda, say no to crack.
