Hi I am new to this site... yesterday I cracked my 150 gallon reef tank, thought I could patch it, seal it ect... has anyone every taken a glass panel off and replace it with a new one? Is there a solvent to help remove the panel apart or is this a done deal, should I just throw the tank out?
any advise would help! all my fish at this time have been moved to my 55 gallon not sure how long they will survive.

    thanks

Did you check your local Craigslist. There's been lots of good deals on tanks lately with the rough economy. Did you contact any local glass shops for a new glass replacement panel?

if crack is on back glass then you can patch it. cut glass panal to overlay the crack by 4 to 5 in. then seal with 100% silicone. If you want to try to replace whole glass panal it can be done but you need to make sure you clean all edges very well and make sure there is no old silicone. Elbowgrease is the best way to clean with razor. Have glass panal cut then replace with 100% silicone. Good luck.

If anything replace the panel...avoid patching the glass...the crack will just expand under the weight of the water pressure

+1. I wouldn't try to patch it myself. You will have to pull the trimming, and reseal the entire tank. If you try to run a new bead of silicone on top of an old, it will leak eventually.
Whether or not you should toss the tank is really up to you. But it can be fixed, heck anything can be fixed. It will just be a good amount of elbow grease. If your livestock is in danger and waiting on it, honestly I would buy a new one and be done with it 100%.

+2 on that. 150G has a LOT of pressure due to the weight of the water, you don't want to risk that much volume. 150G tanks usually have 1/2" or 3/4" thick glass, there is a reason for it. You risk the chance of the tank wall exploding out from under itself if you just patch it. If you want the wall replaced, get it done professionally, from a competant licensed aquarium repair person. If not, I would suggest getting a new tank.
