I am buying a friends tank, or I should say whats left of it. He moved his reef from one tank to another and had a disaster. he said half of his stuff died. Now my question is do i need to do any thing to the live rock, fish, or Corals besides normal acclimating, since something went wrong in his tank?

Odds are it was the sand bed that released high levels of ammonia or nitrite into the tank. I would add new sand only and try and hold the fish and corals in a rubbermaid tub with a heater and power head until you are sure the the water condition is perfect

Yeap, most likely what Jason McKenzie said. Every time I transfer everything from an old tank to a new tank, I never transfered the sand. I've had success with each move. How long has your friend's tank been running? I just tore down my 24g thats been running for almost 3 years and the sand was really dirty. Took maybe a good two hours to clean the sand.
