I was lookin in my tank last night low and behold my blue hippo was laying on its side not moving i was so pissed off because i had just bought the damn thing. So I said to myself never again i am not buying a blue tang they die to easy. So i postponed scooping him out and throwing him away till this morning I come out turn on the light and the darn thing is swiming around just as happy as it wants to be. I guess its apparent these guys like to play dead well I certainly got fooled and his butt almost certainly got flushed lmao.

Were the tank lights off? Maybe he was sleeping. Mine looks the same way when he is sleeping, except that he is under a rock.

Yeah, hippo's are psychotic, weird, and very interesting, cool fish! I have had two. The first one would sleep face down, with its nose pointed directly at the bottom of the tank. My second one (which I have now) sleeps flat on its side.

From the 2 that I have had in the past I am pretty sure they like to play possum. Whenever I would do any kind of routine maintenance with the tank they would hide out and basically lay on their side and play dead until I was done - then they would magically come back to life in a few minutes.

Mine just started the lie on his side thing. He doesn't appear dead though.. his fins are still moving. He lies on his side always in the same spot occasionally. Daytime. Maybe he's just tired. hehe

Yeah I have a hippo and he's pretty crazy - each time I approach the tank he wedges himself between a rock. I have not seen him play dead yet.

the other day I noticed him swimming backwards up the corner of the tank behind the power head..... not sure if this is a precursor to a sickness but I"m going to keep a close eye on him.

Yea, I freaked out when mine "took a nap" cause it was right after I had to move my tank and I was so worried cause I had added the hippo that morning... I was yelling "OAH NO!! MY HIPPO IS DEAD" .. even woke the kids up...

then i reached down to scoop it out and it swam off.. I was then yelling in excitement so much that the dogs came running in growling and snarling like someone was breaking into the house.. lol

I'm learning, my hippo is like my mother-in law....

    lol
