Hi all, new here, as I finally got my 150 LRFO tank up and running. I will give you the whole drama story later in the newbie section, but short for now. While in Hawaii, I grabbed a ziploc baggie full of lava rock, and washed up coral pieces for my tank at home. after 5 days (I forgot to boil the rock.....) I noticed this (pic) growing on one of the rocks. Looks white in the tank, but green out of the water. Anyone know what it is? Doesn't seem to have spread anywhere else luckily. Thanx in advance, Nick

Wee need more info. If you touch the wormy things.. are they calcerous or squishy? If it's fossilized, they could be a type of feather worm with green algae growing over it. If it's squishy. Duh, you know what it might be... some type of sea worm. Give us more feedback.

Squishy, consistency of a cooked noodle. It doesn't move or anything.

How'd you get that through? I thought they were real careful about not letting things, especially live things leave Hawaii. Were you just lucky or do they not care about that stuff or what? Nice souvenirs though. I'm not saying that I'm against it, but I heard of people getting in trouble. GLTA

You are allowed to take small amounts of lava rock, and dead washed up corals....you will be in jail quickly for taking live corals. They check every bag before loading on the aircraft for agriculture and marine life. Mine were checked, and OK. So, they do care, you just have to know how much you can take!

Pulled out the one rock that had it on there, and will let it bake in the AZ sun till someone recognizes it, but probably boil it and toss it back in this week.

I can't tell, they are two small need a close up. That rock you have in your hand looks like it has iron pyrite (FeS2) in it. The little gold squares.

Heh, could be sponge. Could be something else. Do they smell bad? If they do, scrub them.
