I just spotted a creepy black snail. Looks like an all black naserus snail. When I shined a light on its face it appeared to spit out a strange cloud. What is it and should I get it out before it goes away. I haven't added any rock or coral in quite some time so it must have been in here for a while. It is about the size of a quarter.

I'm guessing a Stomatella varia. The white cloud you saw is reproduction. They are very awesome snails and great hitchhiking additions to you any reef.

Trying to get a picture. I called my LFS as well and sent them a pic. they are trying to identify but have not heard of it before. Pic is attached. I'm not sure how to display it. I was just wanting to be sure it isn't dangerous before I lose track of it. I can't believe I have gone this long and not noticed it. It is of pretty good size.

Looks just like the black stomatella, so I assume from the last post it is not dangerous/poisonous or anything else "ous".

Thanks for the quick responses. I have been reading for a long time but have never posted before now. Everybody here is great.

Whether Stomatella or Limpet, a good member of a tank, harmless grazers.

Glad you like the sight. :)

Only reason it made me so worried was that I put in a Klein's butterfly from my LFS that died within 3 hours just last week. They tested my water and everything was perfect. The owner is replacing the fish but I didn't know if this could have potentially done something. The fish kept jumping up against the glass after about an hour in the tank. Eventually injured itself and died.

What type of acclimation did you use and do you know what they tested specifically? SG (specifc gravity) and pH would have been important to test for as well as ammonia, nitrite and nitrates.
