a lot of folks bad mouth CC... a lot of folks that never had problems with it themselves I might add...

I've been using CC for over 2 years in my current tank and I've maintained 0 nitrates for about 2 years so far...

    Don't believe internet regurgitation.

Same here. I've used crushed coral and crushed oyster over the years in many tanks, as well as sand. Never had a problem with any of them. Just a matter of personal preference, maintenance, live rock, water parameters, critters in the tank, etc. Anything can become a problem if you don't keep an eye on it.;D

I've found over the years, there is no set way that things "should" be done. Fads come and go, some work, some don't, some disappear, some come back. Take all the information out there, come to a conclusion that you think will work for you, and then work at making that decision a reality.

I vacuum mine every time I do a water change. I have no real nitrate problems, just like the look of sand better. And changing out the CC is a big project. You have to do it in sections, I'm planning 1/3 at a time and let it set for a week in between sections. So its not a 1 day small under taking, that's why I keep putting it off. If you do it all at once you risk getting spikes in your levels and maybe even a mini cycle.

Depends on the CC it comes in different grades just like sand. I have some mixed in wih my sand.
The grade I have is like a chunkier sand not huge pieces that most folks are thinking about.

If it's the large bits of shell kind I don't care for that and it probably does trap more debris by it's very nature so it probably means more maintainance.

Also if you get any fish/inverts that burrow/dig I you'll need a finer grade substrate than the typical CC super chuncky stuff.
