I'm planning on getting a Mantis Shrimp and I was wondering why kind of filtration is best for a crustacean only aquarium? I've heard mixed information over the years. Some say just do a skimmer while some say to just do a hang on carbon filter. What do you all say?

Whatever kind you like. Imo filtration doesn't really depend on what's in the tank. Bear in mind stomatopods are messy, so you want good filtration, but the method is up to you.

Yeah but I heard that to much filtration strips the water of the things that crustaceans need in order to thrive...

You'll hear and read a lot of myths about many things in this hobby. Most started years ago through assumption or general observation. Most have also been debunked through actual testing, but sadly, are still being passed on as fact by those who read/hear it and want to be the "first" to spread the "new" findings.

That said, no filtration has been proven to strip SW of its components except DI.
