hi, i've seen discussions where people mention having different colors of coralline in their tanks. i'm just wondering if anyone has experience with or heard of people cultivating different colors of coralline in their tanks? it seems to spread pretty randomly but has anyone ever heard of cultivating the colors so that you can have part of your tank covered with different colors of coralline?

also, i was in a LFS and saw this really dark purple/brick red stuff in one of the tanks that i thought was dark red coralline. the guy at the counter wasn't sure but said it might be red slime. to me it looked really nice and not like slime though. i wanted some in my tank but don't want to introduce any slime if that's what it is.

I don't think you can really control the spread of coralline throughout your tank. I have about 5 different kinds including a green one that is very ugly. Whenever I get new rocks, I take some of the pretty bright purple rocks and scrape the crap out of them and let the coralline stir around the tank. It lands where it lands and my tank is predominately the color that I want because thats the only color I scrape.

Dark red brick colored.....sounds like cyano. Could be coralline. Feel it, if its not slimy its probably coralline. A lot of commercial pet stores get the walt smith live rock thats actually painted. That could be the case too.

a little off subject but I can remember in my first tank how please I was when I was able to get all of this beautiful green algae to grow. It was hair like and really luxuriant. It just waved back in forth in the current and without any real effort on my part except perhaps regular water changes with city tap water, it grew, and grew, and grew.

I have some dark red coralline that looks like red slime but is dry to the touch...I also have a very small orange colored patch of coralline and some that is a concrete gray color. and a lot of green and then the basic purleish pink color. I have something on a rock that is a real pretty white color but I dont think it is coralline. If it is I wished it would spread, it is a very cool white color. I think it is a mat from something that once covered part of the rock....

lol, you guys are great. thanks for the tip about spreading the color you want by dispersing it. the story about the green algae was hilarious. i saw a really really small patch of bright orange coraline in an LFS! i wanted it so bad but it's on a big arse rock :-( I'm starting to get lots of colors on the rocks--mostly purple, green, some pink and dark purple...i'm hoping it grows into something beautiful. thanks for sharing thoughts.

If my Orange spreads or even the cool white I could send ya a chuck....Give it 6 months or so and get with me then...I will see how it works...I have the orange in two places now but they are fairly small....

I read somewhere that the lighting spectrum influences the color of coraline.Anyone know for sure?
