Ordered 1 each of the items in post #18 to do a bit of prototyping. Didn't order the cable gripper though. Planning to get the rest of the stuff and then do some tinkering to see what will work.

My current thought is to have the center hole of the heatsink tapped to receive the threads of the gripper. I'm a little concerned about the dis-similar metals (don't think the gripper is aluminum) corroding being so close to the saltwater. I don't think it'll be too bad since there is - in theory anyway - no current running through there. I plan to put some dielectric grease or something in there to really minimize it though. It's been awhile since I had to deal with that kind of stuff; any EE types out there that can refresh my memory and/or provide any input?

Will let you all know when the goods arrive and post some pics.

Yeah, got the LED and the heat sink. Photo upload not working for me at the moment....

Anyhow, it looks pretty cool. Next hurdle is to figure out how to get the wires that will be soldered to the LED up through the center of the heat sink. Then will have to select a cool looking cable gripper and tap the heat sink.

It'll be a year or two before this becomes a reality, but it's gonna be sweet man. :)

Once I re-figure out how to upload pictures I'll post some.

How many led's are you looking at total? You might want to check into a thing called pixel mapping. Its more oriented for theatrical/music production stuff, BUT it is the same exact concept. I use pixel mapping all the time for different events I do, but it is a whole different ball game.

They do make single chip pendants, look at orpheks dif chip pendants. 50w or 100 watt chips. You could build your own setup using like a couple hundred buckpucks. You want each diode controlled which will be costly unless you use a controller for it.

Or go talk to the guys at
    www.cutter.com.au/index.php
they specializde in electronics and do tons of custom led work and can order any cree chip directly from there.
