So I have had a "red" algae problem for about 6 months now. Ive been told time and time again that its cyano, i dont believe it is (at first). It didnt blow off with a power head, it wasnt in a blanket, it didnt even come off with a toothbrush! Sadley enough ive resorted to two different chemicals. Chemi clean...which did nothing for me, and right now im on my fourth dose of algae fix, which i was recomended by a few people. I see no affects what so ever.
My tank is a year old, i have a red sea prizm skimmer, a 15 gallon sump. and do weekly water changes of 8 gallons of r/o water. When i tested for phosphates i got back 0 but that doesnt really mean anything. my nitrates i have been unable to get down to 0 (they are at 20) when my taxes come back im doing a big water change in hopes that it might bring it down more.
This algae is driving me nuts! my lights are down to 5 hours a day. Ive tryed everything...and im still unsure what it even is!
is it possible to have stained my live rocks red?
please help any information would be helpfull!

nitrates 20. ammonia 0 nitrites 0 ...thats about the only thing i have to test for.. i tested for phosphates about a week ago and got 0. I ve looked into red coralline... it doesnt look like the pink and purple that i have in my tank, when i take a rock out and try to scrub it.. it leaves the water red. but doesnt remove any of the algae.

its a crap picture, but for my money I;d still say red coralline ;-)

continue with water chanes to get the nitrates to zero.

nothing on the sand and you saing that it doesn;t bow off really points in the positive direction of coralline.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
If you touch it and it does not feel slimy probably just coralline as Crimson posted,
    :)

Its not slimy to the touch, at one point it looked a little fuzzy though.

Emily, I think its red coralline - you have me on the "fuzzy" aspect, and to that my best guess is it might have had a nuisance algae on top of it that appeared to be fuzzy. I am sorry you find it ugly, I suggest removing the rock as it will spread. Many people would go after that color as 95+% of the coralline out there is purple and it always seem that the other 5% is green.

Anyway, I hope it is coralline – if you think it might be something else (ie, something bad) please take a better picture for us and we can continue to help you diagnose. I guess in the meanwhile, is this showing up anywhere else in the tank ?
