Lately cyano has started to really spread in my fuge and it's even growing on some of my macro algae. Is this a problem if it's only growing in the fuge? Should I just let it be?

I would clean it up. I just removed half my rock from my DT yesterday and did a maintanence cleaning because my cyano and hair algae was getting a little outta hand.

Then do some checking ITO nitrates and phosphates and see what you can do about decreasing those. Your fuge will help, but if it doesn't do the job in it's entirely, a dinitrator and phosphate reactor may be in order. Just take it one step at a time.

    Flow is cyano's enemy.

Same problem here. Any sense in adding a PH in fuge to get some flow going in there?

Maybe I should try to stick a little Rio pump down there and see if that helps?

I put a Korilla PH in mine, and it still grew. If I kept the light off in the fuge for a day, most of it died off, but then would come back in a day or two. Grrr!!

I have some cyano and hair in my refugium – been there for a couple years at least and some times it grows to the size of a baseball and others is practically gone. I suggest you leave your refugium alone, if its not in your DT than what’s the problem – if it ain’t broken…don’t fix it.

In my opinion, if you go digging in your refugium you are going to cause more trouble than good – including effecting your DT’s. The only time I “mess” with my refugium if when there is too much in there and I need to do some weeding. For this I turn off the water supply and use scissors very slowly so not to disturb anything. After an hour or so I resume water – this is probably every 3-4 months. Aside from that, what grows in the refugium stays in the refugium.

You added a swamp to your system – let it be a swamp.

I stuck about 20 blue leg hermits in my fuge and they took care of the cyano in my fuge. It hasn't come back since *knock on wood*. They took care of it after I killed the lights for 3 days, then they were able to eat up the dead cyano. I also had cyano on the chaeto, which turned into GHA after it died off. I just blew it off with a turkey baster, or just pulled it off by hand.
