I have a serious outbreak of cyano. It is mostly on the sand and on one rock. I manually removed most of it over the weekend but it is coming back. I ordered a reactor from BRS and will be starting to run GFO. Any suggestions on how to rid this nuisance from my tank? Nitrates are around 10 and phosphates are barely readable on aps test kit. I do use RO/DI water and the tank has been set up for about 3 months. 2 small clown residents.

The reactor with GFO should rid you of it in a few weeks but as a new tank i think we all go through that.

The GFO reactor will help to get rid of it, also make sure that you arent feeding too much

Most new tanks do experience some cyano blooms, but they are also caused by excess nutrients. Some tips for fighting it are: try and cut back on your feeding, increase flow, when you are doing a water change - use a turkey baster to blow off and behind rocks (sometimes uneaten food will collect in there fueling the cyano growth. Another method is to go lights out for 3 days. If all you have in the tank are fish, they will not be bothered by this at all. I have done this in my reef tank before and everything handled it very well.

Great thanks for the advice. Iwas really hoping this was something newer tanks go through. It is now in the fuge but doesn't seem to be bothering the great ball of cheato. I do have a couple of small frags that were given to me and they seem to be doing well so lights out is not an option. GFO is the way to go then.

GFO will help you, but it might take a while. Also, just so you know, I have a full blown reef, LPS, SPS and softies and have done "lights out" and have never had a problem. Nice to have it as a back up just in case the cyano gets really bad. It can creep onto your frags and smother them.

I think the flow is good. I'm running a danner mag 24 :) Its in the sump in the basement and runs through the floor to the DT. and 2 koralia 1050's on either side of the tank. Maybe i need more circulation inside the tank
