Wow ... been so long since ive been on here... Anywho back in the hobby again ;P Currently have a 55 gallon, with external 530gph filter. 1 Koralia 4 600gph ph. 2x54 w t5 ho Tank has been up and running for 2months now. Using Ro.di water with inline tds meter reading 0ppm Having issues with cyano
    Tests Reads :
    Ammonia 0ppm
    Nitrite 0ppm
    ph 8.0
    Nitrate 0ppm

Tank has been fully cycled with a pair of clowns that i eventually lost due to ich.
Tank is now fish and coral free with several hermits and few mexican turbo's

Im not understanding why i cant get rid of this cyano.. Benn doing HEAVY water changes, and not adding any food (No fish or corals)
Yes i know i DO need a skimmer, and i see and aqua c in the near future. Am running uv sterlizer..
Could my issure be due to low flow? Ive ordered 2 1300gph powerheads to be installed sometinme next week . t5 bulbs are 1 month old. Which will be upgrading to a 6 bulb t5 for christmas\ wanna get rid of this crap before i add any corals or fish.

low flow, and cyano makes there own food, its in between the sand and the actual algae, its best when removing cyano to vacuum it all out and make sure you get it all, also cut your lighting period back as it needs light to live! Hope this helps!

Turn your lights off for 3 days. That is what I did and then I took a turkey baster to suck up the dead cyano..worked like a charm.

Lights off is fine. Are you running Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) and Granular Ferric Oxide (GFO) though? Even if you think you don't have phosphate, if you have cyano, you do, regardless of what a test kit says. Running GFO is therefore a good idea. Also, cyano will utilize organic nutrients, which GAC removes readily. The other big one IME is to do water changes and siphon off the existing cyano. Usually, I would do the water changes using something slightly bigger diameter than an airline tubing. Airline tubing can work too, but it clogs easily.

Then, once you are getting a hold of it, and no more is growing, hit it with lights off to finish it off.
