I have developed a bit of cyano in my tank due to neglect on my part, and I am currently trying to eliminate the source of nutrients.

It seems to be strongest at night, when the lights come on in the morning it is all over the substrate. The cyano decreases steadily throughout the day and at lights out, it is about 80% less than at the beginning of the light cycle.

I find this abit odd, does this suggests that I have greater overall nutrient uptake during the day making less available for cyano? What could be possible reasons for this?

I have chaeto on a reverse light cycle so there should be nutrient uptake at night...that being said, my chaeto has not grown significantly in the last couple months.

Any insight would be great, as my observations seem to contradict everything I have read about Cyano behavior.

Maybe it's growing wildly at night in the fuge at the expense of your chaeto?

That is strange. Never heard of it disapating during the day. Do you change your flow at night?

Also, look into adding some beneficial nitryifying bacteria to your system. Some microbacter 7 or microbe lift special blend, works really well. Their is an imbalance of bacteria in your system causing the cyno bacteria to outcompete what is there.

Yeah I am guessing that it is outcompeting the Chaeto at night, but why would it start losing the nutrient uptake battle during the day?

The only place it is present at the end of the day is in nooks and crannys and in the shadowy areas...very strange indeed. I don't change any flow at night.

I will look into the microbacter and give it a shot...

still unsure why it dissipates during the day, any other input would be great!

This is I believe EXACTLY what is happening in my fuge. Totally loaded with red slime and chaeto has been stunted.

I don't appear to have any serious algae/cyano growth in my fuge...only in the display tank. Perhaps this means my fuge lights are no good.

Not a bad hypothesis. Makes sense to me anyways. What kind of lights are over the fuge?
