So i recently put in 2 rocks that were not "live" but were aquacultured? and they quickly turned a maroonish, dark red, color. And have air bubbles all over them. I believe from what i have read that this is cyano algae?

anyone know how to rid the tank of it other than pulling the rocks and scrubbing it off? Its on the crushed coral bottom. and tank walls. ahh!

If it is Cyano, it should come off easily. If it doesn't come off easily, it is likely coraline.

I had Cyano and removed it by simply using a Siphon on the rocks and an algae scraper on the walls.

I have a magnet cleaner that i get it off the walls with. And i aimed my power head at the rock and the air bubbles go away but the algae does not. I will try rubbing some of it off tonight and see what happens.

Going to pick up a 30 gal tank and stand friday, and some distilled water tonight to mix up some fresh water to do a water change.

So when i move everything to the 30 gal i will scrub the rocks down. Hopefully that will help.

But i noticed that the algae is now growing over the air bubbles. Weird nasty slimy looking. Must be cyano

Cynobacteria is not an actual algae...it's a bacteria :) Treatment to rid your tank of it is somewhat different then getting rid of algae.

its should go on its own, have good flow over it and it will go away, and yes cyano is a bacteria not an algae

So i did not get the 30. Am building a stand for my 75 today and just going to transfer everything in the 20 to that. Going to use a sand bed instead of the crushed coral as i have read the cc can be a nitrate trap. I have a 750 hydor koralia pump in the 20 along with a aquaticlife 115 protein skimmer and i put on a marineland turbo twist 9w UV steralizer. I can not get rid of the cyano! This brown algae stuff keeps growing on the glass and if i turn on the 10k bulb in my light at all i start to get nitrogen bubbles on my rocks! ahh

Turn off all lights for 3 days, if you don't have hard corals that is, and aim your power heads at the problem spots. It should go away after that, also cut down on your feedings and/or do a water change. I am battling the same thing in my 29 gallon, I don't think I have enough flow on the rocks. Need a bigger power head!
