Well nuked it with red slime remover, I have alot of flow in my tank so this stuff turned into long stringy red stuff after I used the chemiclean red slime remover, what gives do I have some mutated cyano or what. I dont know if I should try again after the water change today or not. You guys let me know its like its just flapping around in the flow not budging.

I would just clean the rock of manually. While there is still an option to do it without chemicals, I am a firm believer in following those options first. I do your water change. While you are mixing up your WC SW, I would make an extra fifteen gallons and place into three five gallon buckets. Then get a toothbrush and clean each piece of rock.

Now, that cyano had to be fed. If you do not have a phosphate reactor, I would get one. And a carbon reactor as well. Then figure out how to get your nitrates down. A fuge may work or a denitrator.

It might. But if you do it right, it won't be major. Just don't stir up the sandbed horribly and dip the rock (rinse) before putting it back in the tank. That will get rid of the detrius that has collected in the pores.

You DO have to toothbrush it in water with similar salinity to your DT. You will be amazed at how much junk comes off in your scrubbing buckets. And while you will lose some bacteria off the surface of the rock, LR is sooooo porous, that the majority will remain untouched and unaffected.

And don't make a huge cleaning issue out of it. Cleaning all 140lbs of rock in my tank takes about an hour. I don't spend more than a minute or two on each rock....even the big ones. I just get the big ickies off the surface, dunk it up and down aggressively in the dirty SW, then a few times in the clean SW. Then back in the tank.

I have cleaned my rock in this fashion about three or four times over the past year when cyano or hair algae has gotton out of hand and I needed to start from ground zero. I would dose your tank with Prime for the first three or four days after doing this.

Since my last cleaning (two weeks ago), I have cut the feeding back to twice weekly (strip algae four times weekly), have done a few 30% WC to get the nutrient levels down to a manageable point, and decreased the lighting to four to six hours a day. I just run the lighting when I am home.

Just brush it off in the tank. No need to move the rocks whatsoever. Do it AS you do your water change, and siphon it out as it comes off the rocks.
