    Little Confused With Response

Hi Tangster, I'm a little confused with your response. Can you repost it? The cyno bacteria shows up more on the picture to the right side than it does on the left side. This happens every time the intensity of the lights are at maximum. At low light levels the red slime on the picture to the right hand side disappears. I am suspecting that it could be some nutrients coming from the rock. The rock seems to be one of those man-made type that may have been created for frags. I'm not positive about this but it seems a bit too light in weight. :)

A Gentle Touch And It Peels Away.

The stuff can actually be peeled off quite easily. A matter of fact if I create a strong wave like motion with my hands over it, the stuff peels right off and by the next day, it grows back in the same place. I've adjusted the water flow to pass over the rock in short intervals but this seems to make the mushrooms quite unhappy. I'm feeling very positive about the source of this particular rock. It seems to be made up of some product that may have leeching phosphates.

The Rocks Was Dipped In Saltwater

Hey Tangster, The rocks was allowed to sit in a new batch of saltwater mix, not freshwater. (Oops, my wording may have misguided everyone) ;)

    Thank you!!!

I was going to post a question on this ugly cyano...but all my questions were answered without having to! From past experience I figured my tank had it, but I think I was in denial...lol...my tank is fairly new, so I kept telling myself, its just another stage, it'll pass...but it hasn't, and its getting worse, so I have to take hold of it now...so, I'm going to install another power head, and maybe get some sand sifters, any ones inparticular that come to mind? When I worked at Petco (where I learned about cyano) I would net out as much of it as possible, but I don't use nets here at home, and I have crushed coral as a substrate, not coarse (like at petco) so I don't syphon either...any other quick fix ideas?

ahhhh! It's back! After all that work...I knew I didn't get it all out...but I was hoping, crossing my fingers that it would just go away...almost a week later, and it's back...ugh...what do I do??

    Hi,
I had the same problem and I tried everything. I bought (I think it is called) RED slime remover. I am not sure who makes it. But the stuff worked great and I havent seen any red slime again.

Since my last post, I've (once again) cleaned out as much as possible...only for it to come back WITH A VENGEANCE! Now it's on some of my rock...and it's even stringier than before...I'm thinking it's worse cause it just spreads when you disturb the substrate, but its nearly impossible not to if you want to gt it all out...I very carefully try to "peel" away the layer with my fingertips, but some always gets away...i bought a lawnmower blenny cause that was the only algae eater they had (Petco), and he seems to be munching on it, but there's way to much for him to get it all. I'm going to do what I didn't want to do, and keep my lights off for a few days...see how that works, some say it'll slow it down, others say it won't matter. Also, I've read a few places that Hydrogen peroxide can kill it, has anyone heard of that? Just the thought of putting peroxide in my tank...I don't know...my flow is suffice I think...I can see the movement all the way down to the substrate...the exact specs of my power heads I can't remember off hand, but I know I've listed it in my profile...I don't believe I'm overfeeding, I only give 2 cubes a day, one in the am, one in the pm, and they eat every bit of it... all the params are in order, the nitrates are a tad high, reading @ 5.0 ppm, so I'll do a water change this evening...ugh, I'm so sick of it, I once had a pretty tank, now it's all gross...I'm about ready to dump ALL my substrate, and replace it...but, with my luck, all the fish will die, and it'll just come right back...lol...
