I have had my 40 breeder running for a week now. Should my cycle have started already? I think it's going to be a long one!

if you just leave a tank full of water the water wont automatically cycle, it needs some waste added like a damsel, but preferrably just a piece of shrimp that will start you off

Many more things can start a cycle. Call me old school, but I still all ways recommend 1 single yellow tail damsel.

When I first started my tank about 13 years ago I used a school of Damsels per LFS recommendation. Now I was only 11 back then so I didn't know any better. But it worked...had a 3 stripe, some dominos and the obligatory blue damsel.
