Pellets as in pellet food? And yes I have used the red slime remover, works great but is just a temporary band-aid for a reoccurring problem in almost every case, and the cynano will just come back.

+1 Anything you add to a new tank that is going to decay and cause ammonia to spike is going to start your cycle. I still prefer a piece of shrimp, but a couple pounds and cook dinner….one for the tank and the rest for your belly – it’s a win win my friend.

As for the cyano remover – it’s not snake oil, but as mentioned you need to resolve the cause not the effect. You can remove cyano manually and then go after the cause and resolve it. Otherwise you are going down a slippery slope that many new reef keepers have gone down before you - it’s a frustrating and expensive slope at that. Would you like to discuss the overall major causes of cyano bacteria or are you just asking for future reference ?

I used chemiclean and it wiped out all the cyano in my tank... for about a week and a half. Then I was back where I started.

Exactly. You can achieve the same result by manually removing the bacteria – but until you resolve the cause it will resurface. Old bulbs, phosphates, DOC’s, Nitrates, Carbon dioxide – all things to consider and look into.
