Put another fresh shrimp in the water, you need to be sure that the bacteria are being fed ammonia. Either a shrimp, some fish food etc.

Hi all. Just wanted to ask. I put all 55 lbs of my liverock in my tank in the beginng to cycle it. Its been over 2 weeks now, and all the levels seem to be at 0, but I do have brown stuff growing here and there. I have a few fish...is this brown growth the algea your talking about? If so, what do I do? Add Snails or crabs? I have 1 hermit, but hes too big, so hes going back to the ocean....

and another big question I can't seem to get a clear answer on, does light effect the green and brown algea growth? I have cheap lights right now...

look at the brown at the top, on the peak of the rock...

The brown algea is Diatoms and there is no way around them for a new tank. They are caused be nutrients in your water. Keep skimming and use RO water if you can. The Diatoms will slowly be replaced by green algea then the purple will start growing in places :]. Just keep your water clean as you can...do not overfeed. This will help the algea. I think it also has to do with silicates in your water so if you can afford it get a Reverse Osmoses unit. I got 1 on ebay for 125 bucks and that will deffinately help with the algea. Just have patience thats what everyone tells my. Although its hard for me to wait to do the thing I want. Just check your tank water parameters and let everyone here help you. Read through all the old posts. That will awnser alot og questions. The lights dont matter as much as the water quality.

Thanks Jay...its my second try...the first tank was scratched badly, so I started over with a reef tank....55 lbs of LV for 199.99 good? had alot of life on them....I was happy, I guess thats what counts...I got that little piece of rock/tube polyps (sound right?) tonight...

also have a snowflake eel ,12inch.... along with the Seaba Clown and aneome..its nice. very quite tank, nice and clear, no scratches!!!!
diatoms? I read up on that then too..thanks!!!
