I used one yellow tail damsel, wasn't too bad on him, I still have him to this day. Now, I used him b/c I intended to keep him. If you just use the damsel for the cycle then plan on returning him, I don't think that's right. My second choice is to just wait it out, believe it or not, it can be done, even with 100% pure dry base rock.

I used a combo of 1 shrimp, 1 damsel, 1 piece of live rock, tried out one of the bacteria in a bottles.. can't remember which one.
I think all you really need is a shrimp. Of course other methods will work too.

My advice is even after the cycle is complete wait a month. Fish don't like new tanks even if they're ammonia, nitrite free.

I wouldn't recommend cycling with a damsel because as much as I hate them, what if it were to survive? Also, I think a dead shrimp will cause more waste than a living fish, which when cycling isn't waste what you want?....

Do you think a green chromis is tough enough or not hardy enough. from my personal experience, green chromis are less hardy than other damelfish but also are a lot more friendly which i like. I ask this because i dont need a dead fish buried in the aquascape once my tank has finished cycling... well if the dead fish is still in there then i guess the cycle will never end but you get my point ;)
