So after having my 110g set up for a few years, I got tired of the appearance and started over. I sold all of my coral and rock and aquascaped 135 pounds of base rock. I didn't add any previous live rock but did use 75% of old water and kept my SB. My question is since I didn't start with establish live rock, what should I do to aid in the cycling process with this base rock? I did transfer my fish and a few softies from my last set up but will not add anything more until things are settled. Thanks for any and all input :)

I would have probably replaced the sb as they do tend to foul depending on your husbandry. I would test ammonia and nitrite. If none are present you may have already soft cycled it. I would feed sparingly for a few weeks and keep some wc water and/or ammonia, nitrite detoxifier on hand. You didn't say how long you have had the new setup.Keeping the old water does very little to aid in cycling.

definitely keep an eye on your ammonia. I probably would have waited to add livestock with all new rock. You have more than enough in there to cycle. I'm wondering if you may have jumped the gun on adding livestock :(

Yeah, I couldn't disagree with you guys on that one. I tried many options but all of them fell through the cracks. LFS buddy was gonna hold my livestock till I made sure levels were good but did a last minute move about two blocks away. With all the moving of tanks and stress of handling that, I didn't want to add more stuff for him to take care of or possibly stress the fish even more. FORTUNATELY, my ammonia, over the past two weeks only slightly rose then dropped back down. It hasn't budged and the last test was Sunday evening. My calcium levels have dropped more than what it use to though? Haven't figured that one out.

About husbandry....once the tank is cycled and more consistent, I typically do water changes bi weekly and on the rare occasion monthly. I have been testing nearly every day or every other during these past couple "nervous weeks" but tend to mellow out to weekly when I figure out what I need to dose if at all. I keep a clean skimmer cup, siphon sump buildup up during water changes and don't believe in heavy feeding (just IMO) Any questions or input is welcome :)

Keep the fingers crossed that things stay the way they are now ;)

It sounds like you have a handle on everything and that things are settling nicely for you. Positive karma your way!
