    This has often been debated.
I personally used the shrimp method.
The problem with this method is the fast ammonia spike with no prolonged introduction of ammonia that you would get by having a fish in the tank.
So what I have done it to feed the tank with small amounts of food once the shrimp was used.
    this has worked very well.
I do not believe in putting a fish through an ammonia spike, Plus if it lives do you really want a damsel in your tank?

I'm not sure.. .I think that's why most people do a slower damsel or shrimp cycle. .It's easier to monitor. But, yes it's regular household ammonia.
Another method is a product like "stability". It's basically bacteria in a bottle. Yes I'm a pilot.

Using a live animal to cycle your tank is kinda cruel. I would go with the shrimp. Plus most people hate damsels so then your going to have to get them out of there.

I used LIVE shrimp to cycle my tank. I live near many bait shops. Live shrimp are $3 a Dozen. I put in 6 and they did a great job.

Not one died from the ammonia and they had a great feast as I started to pluck them out (one at a time) and feed them to each other. :devil1:
