    How long does it usually take for a 16 gal, It has been 2 weeks and the nitrites are just starting to go up.

    It's different for each tank, just do 10-15% water changes every week. When your ammonia is at 0 and your nitrates are really low, then it's readdy for your first fish.

    Go slow or it will cost you. Most likely another month at least before I would consider adding anything.

    if your not using live rock your never going to truely cycle your tank or live sand i never used live rock in tanks under 20 gallons my filtration and sand bed kept up with my clownfish and 2 damsels
